Our teeth are with us for life, and just like the rest of our body, they can begin to show signs of wear and tear with age. Over time, enamel thins, old dental work starts to break down, and the bite can slowly collapse, making everyday activities like eating and smiling more difficult. But no matter your age, you deserve to smile with confidence.
That’s exactly what one of our amazing patients proved. At 80 years old, this proud grandmother was ready to reclaim her smile, and we were honored to help her do just that.

How Her Smile Was Holding Her Back
When our patient first came to us, she told us she hadn’t shown her teeth when she smiled in years. Her teeth had become deeply discolored and dark, and her old dental work had started to break down.
She also had a lot of enamel erosion and severely worn-down teeth, which caused her bite to collapse, which changed the shape of her face and her smile.
She simply didn’t feel confident smiling or even talking without covering her mouth. Her teeth had become worn, uneven, and were no longer supporting her jaw the way they should, which was putting strain on her jaw joints and limiting the proper function of her bite.
Her grandson worked with our team in 2024 to restore his smile, and after seeing his amazing transformation, she wanted to join him in sharing her smile with pride. She was about to celebrate her 80th birthday and told us she was ready for a change. She needed a comprehensive approach to rebuild her oral health, but she was nervous about whether it was too late. Our answer? It’s never too late to smile again!

The Problem with a Collapsed Bite
A collapsed bite happens when the teeth become worn down or shift over time. Without the support of teeth that are tall enough to hold the jaws in the correct position, the upper and lower jaws to come too close together when the mouth is closed. This can make the face appear more sunken or aged, and can contribute to jaw pain, uneven chewing, and even broken dental work. Many people don’t realize how much their bite affects their facial structure and confidence. Until it’s restored and they see the improvement!
In this case, our patient’s collapsed bite had made her lower face appear shorter, and her smile line (the curve of the teeth visible when she smiled) had all but disappeared. Without support from a healthy bite, her lips curved downward, making her smile look more like a frown.
Our goal was to rebuild her bite carefully and safely, not only to give her a more youthful appearance but to protect her long-term dental and jaw health.

Our Plan: Rebuild a Stable Bite to Restore a Youthful Appearance
We created a custom treatment plan to address both function and aesthetics. First, we planned to carefully open her bite enough to restore proper spacing and facial volume without causing strain on her jaw joints or muscles. Even small changes like this can make a big difference, but they need to be done with great care, especially in older adults.
To test how her jaw would respond, we placed temporary crowns designed to simulate her final smile. These temporaries stayed in place for four weeks while we monitored her comfort, speech, chewing, and any signs of wear. During this time, she adapted beautifully, proving her jaw could handle the adjustment.

Recreating a Beautiful Smile
Once we confirmed everything was stable, we moved forward with her final restorations. To enhance the appearance of her teeth, we performed a gingivectomy, a minor procedure where we gently reshape the gum tissue to expose more of the natural tooth.
At Lake Baldwin Dental, we use an advanced dental laser to perform this type of gum contouring in a quick, predictable procedure with faster, more comfortable healing than traditional gum surgery.
This made her teeth appear longer and more youthful and allowed us to create ideal proportions for her new smile.
We then worked with our trusted lab partner to craft beautiful, durable crowns designed to create the perfect size, shape, and color for each tooth. This allows us to deliver completely custom smile that looks authentically “her.” These crowns not only look natural and bright, they also add strength and stability to the bite, replacing older worn dental work and protecting the teeth underneath.

Celebrating Gorgeous Results!
The results are stunning. Her face looks brighter and more lifted, and her new teeth looked natural, healthy, and confident. But the biggest change wasn’t physical. It was emotional.
She started smiling again.
She told us that for the first time in years, she felt like herself. She could talk, laugh, and smile freely, without hesitation or embarrassment. And we could not be more thrilled to be part of her journey.
