Is Your Dentist a Basketball Legend?

We wanted to take a moment this week to shout out a huge CONGRATULATIONS to Dr. Dunn! Many of you may not know, but your dentist is a hot shot on the basketball court. (Did you see the time he won $10,000 for sinking three near impossible shots in under 24 seconds at a Magic game? Check out the video. It’s seriously amazing. Check it out here: This weekend, his alma mater, Bishop Moor Catholic High School, honored him with an induction to their Hall of Fame!
Dr. Dunn still holds his place as one of the top outside shooters in Bishop Moore history. He racked up 1400 points over his basketball career at the school, and went on to play for Loyola University in New Orleans as well. Add in record setting seasons as a two-time All-Conference, All-County guard, and you’ve got the idea. The man played some awesome b-ball.
At the induction event on Thursday evening, Dr. Dunn faced down one of his least favorite activities (public speaking) to deliver a message of thanks and a few anecdotes about what made him such a great player. Obviously, he credits his father as one of his first coaches, describing a back yard hoop with booby traps on both sides (pool on one, neighbor’s vicious dog on the other) and the use of a broom as interference to practice shooting over giants. Likewise, his mother received accolades for feeding a team of hungry teenage boys and always offering support and encouragement. He reminisced about late night pick-up games with friends in the Bishop Moore gym, which was notoriously left unlocked most of the time.
A great crowd turned out to congratulate the inductees. In attendance were, of course, Dr. Dunn’s entire family including wife Jeanie and their eight children, as well as his parents. Past friends and coaches even flew in from out of state. Pat Lawrence, a past coach and childhood idol, came in for the event, long-time friend Patrick McDonough flew in from DC, and former college team mate Brian Lumar surprised Dr. Dunn by flying in from New Orleans.
Dr. Dunn’s basketball career helped shaped him into the team player he is today. He emphasized the importance of team work and open communication every day here at Lake Baldwin Dental, which makes this not only a great place to work, but an amazing place to receive dental care. We are so proud of Dr. Dunn for this great honor, and grateful that he has been such an encouraging coach to all of us. Keep dunking, Orlando!
